New Hobbies

Or better yet--trying new things, because I'm pretty sure this is a 'one and done'.

One of my goals for this year was to take advantage of all the options my maker space (NextFab) offers, one of them being classes.  As I'm a project person at heart, I was captivated by the mid-century modern chair class held last fall, so when the class popped up again for a winter session, I jumped headfirst.

I often do this--throwing myself into something--without any practical experience behind me.  My first quilt (and first time hand sewing) was a queen sized quilt, not a pillow like the instructor recommended.  My first knitting project, back in the 80s) was a Lopi sweater (iykyk). So even though I've never done any sort of woodwork before and find cutting machinery terrifying, I wanted the chair. Mostly because I had an amazing quilt remnant that'd make a great cushion.

So I pulled up my big girl pants, and signed up.  Let me tell you, bandsaws, table saws, routers, even the drum sander--they are SCARY! And wood--it is not as forgiving as fabric or yarn! But I stuck with it, and now I'm the happy owner of a slightly wonky but beautifully cushioned chair.

Next up: jewelry!
